Can-Do Statement

CAN-DO statements are used to describe the language proficiency level of learners across different skills and competencies. The following CAN-DO statements show what learners at this level are expected to achieve at this level:

Listening:

  • I can understand the main points and supporting details in conversations, presentations, and audio materials on various topics.

  • I can follow the content of TV shows, films, and radio broadcasts, even if the language is somewhat colloquial or informal.

  • I can comprehend different Spanish accents and regional variations.

Speaking:

  • I can participate in extended conversations and discussions on a wide range of topics using more complex sentence structures.

  • I can express opinions, thoughts, and ideas with clarity and coherence.

  • I can narrate and describe events in the past, present, and future using appropriate verb tenses (e.g., present perfect, future).

Reading:

  • I can understand the main ideas and details in longer texts, such as articles, essays, and literary excerpts.

  • I can comprehend texts written in different styles and registers, including formal and informal language.

  • I can interpret and analyze information from authentic materials, such as news articles and opinion pieces.

Writing:

  • I can write coherent and well-organized compositions, essays, and reports on various topics.

  • I can express my thoughts and arguments effectively, supporting them with examples and evidence.

  • I can use a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures to convey meaning accurately.

Cultural Awareness:

  • I can analyze and discuss cultural perspectives on social, political, and environmental issues in Spanish-speaking countries.

  • I can compare and contrast cultural values and norms between Spanish-speaking societies and my own culture.

  • I can understand and discuss the impact of historical events on the cultures of Spanish-speaking communities.

 

The CAN-DO statements for Spanish 201 indicate the higher language proficiency level and cultural awareness that learners are expected to achieve upon completing this intermediate course. As you  progress to higher levels, you will continue to refine and expand your language skills, enabling them to engage in more complex conversations and explore deeper cultural topics.
