Can-Do Statement

CAN-DO statements are used to describe the language proficiency level of learners across different skills and competencies. The following CAN-DO statements show what learners at this level are expected to achieve at this level:

Listening:

  • I can understand the main points and relevant details in conversations and audio materials on familiar topics.

  • I can follow simple narrations, instructions, and announcements, even if they are spoken at a moderate pace.

  • I can comprehend conversations and discussions related to everyday life, personal experiences, and common interests.

Speaking:

  • I can participate in short conversations on familiar topics and express my opinions and preferences.

  • I can describe past events and experiences using basic verb tenses (e.g., preterite and present).

  • I can engage in role-plays and short presentations on topics related to personal experiences and interests.

Reading:

  • I can understand the main ideas and specific information in short texts, such as newspaper articles, emails, and simple narratives.

  • I can comprehend texts with familiar vocabulary and basic grammatical structures.

  • I can read and understand simple dialogues and conversations between characters.

Writing:

  • I can write short paragraphs and simple compositions about familiar topics, personal experiences, and opinions.

  • I can compose emails and messages to convey basic information and make simple inquiries.

  • I can use basic verb tenses (e.g., present, preterite) and connectors to create coherent written texts.

Cultural Awareness:

  • I can recognize and compare cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries, such as customs, traditions, and holidays.

  • I can understand and discuss cultural perspectives on various topics, such as family, food, and celebrations.

  • I can identify common cultural nuances in the Spanish language, such as regional variations and expressions.

As with the Spanish 101 and 102  courses, the CAN-DO statements for Spanish 121 provide an outline of the language proficiency level and cultural awareness expected from learners completing this level. You will continue to expand your  language skills as you  progress to higher levels of Spanish instruction.
